Footprints In the Sand

(for Wendy)

The footsteps of dinosaurs
left soft and vulnerable
impressions of their passing
on the sand of ancient beaches
that turned to cryptic images in stone
of one brief moment in a life
that came to represent the whole.

We need to think of what we do,
not as footprints in the sand
which the slightest wave erases,
but as lessons graved in stone
and all that there may be
to tell the world to come
of who and what we were.
